The reduction, effective September 1, will see Xperia X being sold at Rs 38,990. This is lower by Rs 10,000 or about 21 per cent from the launch price of Rs 48,990 in May this year. The Xperia Z5 Premium will now be priced at Rs 47,990, which was earlier available at Rs 55,990 at the launch in October 2015. This translates into a reduction of Rs 8,000 or 14%.

Sony Corporation and Samsung Electronics have each laid off about 150 executives in India. The reason behind is, slowing sales in the country in the past 2 months and increased competition from Chinese companies that’s eating away at their smartphone market shares. Sony India is now scaling back the mobile business infrastructure it had created across channels and regions, which has led to the job cuts.

Micromax Informatics grew sales by a whopping 47% in 2014-15 to Rs 10,450 crore, while Sony’s Indian unit grew its business 10% with revenue at Rs 11,010 crore, according to their annual return filed with RoC. Two years ago, Micromax was not even half of Sony in turnover. Sony is restructuring its smartphone business by exiting the sub-Rs 10,000 segment. As per Counterpoint Research, Micromax is facing pressure in $50-100 price segment from Intex, Lava and others. However, its Yu brand alone is now selling more smartphones than Xiaomi online.

Sony has announced its acquisition of Toshiba’s image sensor business for $155 million. Toshiba’s manufacturing facilities and employees will be transferred to Sony Semiconductor Corporation by the financial year ending March 2016. After failing to make a dent in the smartphone segment, Sony has shifted focus to its image sensor unit. With its image sensors used in a majority of high-end phones from the likes of Apple, Samsung, LG and Xiaomi, Sony will be looking to maintain its competitive edge.

The company posted a net profit of $280 million (33.6 billion JPY) on revenue of $15.8 billion (1,892.7 billion JPY). Operating profit came in at $733 million (88 billion JPY). Sony’s smartphone arm continues to struggle with revenue dropped 15 percent to reach $231 million (279.2 billion JPY) during the quarter.A $172 million (20.6 billion) loss on paper. Positive foreign exchange rates and continued growth of PlayStation 4 games were positives for Sony. Revenue from its game and network services division — where the PS4 falls — rose 16.5 percent year-on-year to $3 billion, with a $199 million profit (up 10 percent.). The company recently rejected the reporst that it would exit the business as it did with Vaio PC unit.

Microsoft has partnered with 20 OEMs including LG, Sony, Haier, among others to pre-install the Microsoft Office apps like Word, Excel and Powerpoints, OneNote, OneDrive along with Skype apps on Android tablets from the respective companies. The latest move comes in line with the “mobile-first, cloud-first” strategy. Just yesterday, Microsoft announced that its digital voice assistant Cortana is coming to Android and iOS.
